The March to Circleville

On Saturday, October 19th, the Marching Royals took a trip to the Circleville Pumpkin Festival to march in the parade. The Circleville Pumpkin Festival is an event that takes place every year during the month of October. The festival has many different activities for people of all ages like Miss Pumpkin and Little Miss Pumpkin shows, parades, arts and crafts and many others. The Royals have made it a tradition to attend this event for many years, and it does not seem like it will end anytime soon. Rain and chilly temperatures made the event less than pleasurable. Junior band member, Brydan Lohr, said, “The rain stopped when we were about halfway there, but it was still a chilly event.” However, the Ohio State football game was still at the top of his priority list. This is the last time that the seven seniors in the marching band will attend this event as a Royal, so while there they had an opportunity to pose for some photos in the lineup for the parade. The Pumpkin Festival is something that these seven seniors have looked forward to every year they have been in band. I am sure they will miss the experience and performing in front of this large crowd. The Circleville Pumpkin Festival has left the seniors with a few memories to look back upon, and it may make them want to visit the festival in the future.

State Supreme Court

Ohio Supreme Court Comes To Bucyrus

Matthew Crall, local Prosecutor, came to Wynford High School to inform junior and senior students about the State Supreme Court case coming to Bucyrus High School. He gave background information about how the State Supreme Court works and courtroom expectations. Juniors and seniors will witness the court case of Ohio V. Jeffrey McGlotham. Mr. McGlotham is claiming that he is staying with a woman and has no financial responsibility because he is not a true resident of the home. He is claiming that he is not living there. He has been charged with domestic violence against the woman he is staying with and cannot afford to contribute financially. He should not be barred from protection under the law, so he wants the State Supreme Court to reverse the Eighth District Court of Appeals previous judgement. He is solely arguing that the state cannot show shared financial

responsibility because he is not a resident of the home. He denied having any key possessions in the home proving his residency. After the case is heard, the State Supreme Court will decide whether Mr. McGlotham was a resident of the home and determine if the previous verdict can be overturned. Wynford Varsity Volleyball Falls to Mohawk in Sectional Finals

On October 19, 2013, Wynford varsity volleyball played Mohawk at Mansfield Senior for the Sectional Championship. The Warriors defeated the Royals in four sets: (25-13), (25-23), (19-25), and (25-21). The Wynford Royals finished 10-13 overall and 8-6 in the NCC placing fourth. Coach Hurles said, “The most memorable part of the season was when the team played Wynford/Mohawk/Monroeville during a tri-match. The girls stepped up and decided they wanted to play”. This was our four seniors: Meghan Harrer, Beth Ogden, Amber Gottfried, and Brenna Quinn’s last game as a varsity volleyball player at Wynford High School. Senior, Brenna Quinn’s most memorable part of the season was, “Bonding with the team, seeing the team progress, and get better throughout the season,” she said.

Freshman Football Beats the Eagles

Wynford freshman played the Eagles on Thursday, October 17, 2013, in a nail biter. The Royals took the lead in the first quarter 8-0. The Eagles managed to come back and score before halftime but failed to convert on the two-point conversion attempt making the score 8-6. The Eagles controlled the third quarter increasing the score to 12-8. The Eagles defense stopped the Royals for most of the fourth period as well, but the Royals managed to score on Zac Hoffman 40 yard touchdown run with four minutes left on the clock putting the Royals ahead 14-12. The Royals defense stopped the Eagles on a fourth and goal attempt to hold on for the win.  Mr. Amicone commented about his players saying, “They played hard, worked hard, and won a NCC battle with the Eagles.”

Cross Country Girls Sneak into Regionals

On October 19, 2013 at Amann’s Reservoir in Galion, Ohio, the girls competed in the first race of the Division III Northwest District Championship. The weather was less than perfect conditions.  It was raining, very windy, and the course was a complete muddy mess from the previous races tearing it up. That did not stop our girls. Our first runner crossing the finish line for the Royals was Ellie Richmond finishing third overall with a time of 20:55.28.  Other finishers for the Royals were: Madi Schiefer (32nd, 23:16.43), Rachel Redolf (36th, 23:52.61), Aryn Copeland, (41st, 24:03.40 ), Sara Hoffman (42nd, 24:07.06 ) and Madison Graham (51st, 24:38.18). The six girls combined for a score of 148 and placed fourth as a team which means they qualified for the last position in the regionals. The last girls team that made it to the regionals was about seven years ago, so its a big accomplishment for our girls cross country team. The seniors thought their high school career was coming to an end, but a new door was opened. The girls are off to Youngstown on Saturday, October 26th to compete in the regional race starting at 11a.m.

Wynford FFA Newsletter 

District Forestry was held on September 12th at Camp Michael in Bucyrus Ohio. The Wynford FFA team placed first in the district. Annika Gerlach placed first overall with Aryn Copeland close behind her in fourth. State Forestry was held on October 5th at Hocking Hills College in Nelsonville, Ohio. The members who represented the Wynford chapter were Aryn Copeland, Ethan Stuckey, Annika Gerlach, and Luke Scott. Luke Scott lead the team placing 53rd overall. The team placed 17th out of 38 participating teams. 

The District soils contest was held on September 26th in Richland County. The Urban team placed seventh with Tessa Starner leading the team. Other team members consisted of Callie Ruffener, Madalyn Assenheimer, and Loagan Neal. Freshman FFA members Austin Honaker, Grace Scheifer, Tara Zinser, and Aaron Hand represented the Rural team at districts. The team placed fourth overall with Grace Schiefer leading the team. Grace placed fifth overall in the district contest.  On October 12th The Wynford FFA chapter rural soil judging team attended State Soil judging. The contest was held at Farm Science Review in London, Ohio and the team placed 33rd. 

The FFA and Band hosted the annual Chicken BBQ this fall on October 5, 2013 at the high

school. The BBQ was a success and all the meals were sold. There were 900 meals sold that evening. Thank you to everyone that supported the FFA/Band, and we hope to see you next year. 

The FFA chapter’s annual fruit sale started October 17th. The sale will close on November 17th with plans for the fruit, nuts, canned meat, and BBQ sauce to arrive on December 4th. Royal Scribes

Royal Scribes Hold First Meeting of Year

The Royal Scribes is a club for Wynford junior and senior high school students. The club’s purpose is to encourage and promote creative writing, as well as improve student’s skills as writers. The club is a community of writers that act as a support group. The Royal Scribes’ plans for this year are to publish an anthology of original student work, host an open mic coffee shop, have a guerilla poetry day, and go on field trips. Guerilla poetry is putting poems in multiple places at the school to try to subliminally get people to like poetry. The officers of the Royal Scribes are Caleb Hess (president), Joey Caserta (vice president), Madalyn Assenheimer (secretary), Sami Strickland (secretary), Katie Hoover (treasurer), Addi Bowen (social events coordinator), Allyssa Sheets (social events coordinators), Emilee Hoover (Project Coordinator), and Kat White (project coordinator). The Royal Scribes are still accepting new members; to become a member you can contact any of the officers or the advisor, Mrs. Caserta. The next meeting will be after school on October 21. There will also be meetings during activity periods throughout the year.

2013-2014 Wynford High School Office Aids

The new 2013-2014 high school office aids are Alexa Franklin, Madison Graham, Reegan Scott, Nick Miller, Kelsey Redden, and Paige Kissling. This year office aide numbers were reduced due to a change in studyhall format. In years past, the high school office would have at least one aide per period but this year aides are only working during very busy periods. The high school office aids have many jobs such answering the phone, helping with deposits, making copies, doing PA announcements and running errands for Mrs. Daiber and Mr. Holbrook. Mrs. Daiber said, “Offices aids are very helpful.” Once she needed to give a message to a student but couldn’t leave the office because the phone kept ringing. At times like that office aids are a big help.

Lady Royals Upset Cougars: Advance to Sectional Finals

On Wednesday night at Mansfield Senior High School the Lady Royals volleyball team had their first sectional volleyball game against the Ashland Crestview Lady Cougars.  Wynford shut down the Cougars in three, quick sets.  The scores of the three sets  were 25-18, 25-15, and 25-22.  Despite being a late night, the Lady Royals pulled through for another Royal victory. Coach Shauna Hurles stated to the team, “tonight marks a win that leads to several wins in our tournament run.” The Wynford Lady Royals play again Saturday, October 19 at Mansfield Senior for the Sectional Final tournament game.

7th Grade Football

7th Grade Football Falls to Upper Sandusky

On Tuesday, October 15, 2013, the 7th grade football team played their last game of the season. They hosted the Upper Sandusky Rams and kickoff was at 5:00 p.m. Wynford started off with the ball first but didn’t keep possession long. They were forced to punt after failing to gain a first down. On the first play of the game, the Rams scored and converted on the two point conversion. This put the Rams up 8-0 early in the first quarter. Wynford was again forced to punt but then their defense forced Upper to punt as well. On Upper’s punt, Wynford’s punt returner fumbled the kick and the Rams got the ball right back. The Wynford defense was able to hold to Rams once they got into the red zone. Wynford forced a turnover on downs as the first quarter drew to an end. Wynford’s struggling offense again is forced to punt on their first possession to start the second quarter. The Rams drove the ball right down the field for a score. The Rams were unsuccessful on the two point conversion, making the score 14-0. The Royals got the ball back and their offense started to make some progress after completing a successful pass play to give the Royals their first first down of game. Though after their successful play, Wynford failed to make any more progress and was forced to punt. The Rams were able to score again but were stopped on the two point conversion by the Royals defense. This made the score 20-0 at halftime. In the third quarter, the Rams score on the first play of the half and try to kick the extra point. The extra point was no good making the score 26-0. This would end up being the final score of the game. In the fourth quarter, Wynford’s offense hit a spark and was driving down the field. Only seconds left in the game, the Royal’s try to go for a deep pass only to have if picked off. The Royals ended their season 0-6 in the league. When asked about the 7th game team, Mr. Barbuto said proudly, “The boys got better and better every week they played.”

Cross Country

Richmond Takes First in Last NCC Meet

The cross country team competed at the last NCC meet ever on Saturday, October 12, 2013 at Amens Reservoir in Galion, Ohio. The brisk morning started off with the high school boys finishing 5th out of 7 teams. Our leading senior runners were Mark Pfeifer (15th, 18:44:55) Jacob Hord (16th, 18:46:99) for 2nd team NCC.  Honorable mention honors went to Donnie Brooks (19th, 18:51:28). Still going strong in the race was Ellie Richmond who won the girls race with a time of 20:44:91 and received 1st team NCC. Finishing a few spots behind Ellie was Madison Schiefer (7th, 22:20:84) taking the last spot for 1st team NCC. Wynford’s remaining top five scorers were Rachel Redolf (18th, 23:19:21) and Sara Hoffman (20th, 23:40:52) taking honorable mention honors. Madison Graham (22nd, 23:49:81) who sadly missed out on the NCC awards. Our girls placed 3rd out of 6 teams and missed being runner up by 3 points. Our medalist in junior high girls was Shay Miller (9th, 15:06:12) and the team placed 4th. On the junior high boys team, Josh Rose was also a medalist placing 9th with a time of 12:57:20 and the team placed 2nd. The junior high season is sadly over but the varsity teams compete in the district race in Galion on October 19th for possible regional qualifying.

Royals Support Breast Cancer Awareness

October is National Breast Cancer awareness month. Different sporting events hold games to raise money with donations and fun activities for fan participation. On October 3, 2013, Wynford volleyball hosted the Volley for the Cure match against the Colonel Crawford Eagles. Many activities took place in between each game between the Royals and the Eagles. There was a pink king drawing for whichever senior guy raised the most money. Alec Miller raised $37.00 that week at school and was elected king. Alec was escorted by senior volleyball player Beth Ogden while wearing a pink tank top, pink short shorts, pink camo hat and cowboy boots. Alec said, “I was very surprised that I won pink king and I was extremely embarrassed.” In total, $237.04 was raised for the event which included the pink king and raffle cans which was all

donated to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation. Other pink king nominees from the senior class were Jake Glowaski who was escorted by Brenna Quinn; Mason Davis, who was escorted by Meghan Harrer; and Brock Williamson who was escorted by Amber Gottfried. Other activities took place such as the student section went out onto the court and served balls over the net trying to hit t-shirts laying on floor for a chance to win. Jake Glowaki and Hunter Miller had a race to see who could put on spandex, knee pads and a jersey the fastest and serve three balls in and over the net. Hunter Miller came out on top and won a $10.00 gift card to Bakers Pizza. Both teams wore pink jerseys for the game. Wynford’s Varsity team wore pink tank top jerseys, neon pink shoe strings and socks. Many fans attended this game and were decked out in pink to show their awareness for breast cancer. Royals Outlast Tigers in Overtime

The Wynford Royals Varsity football team hosted the Galion Tigers on Friday, October 11, 2013. The game was an even match up with neither team scoring until the second quarter.  The Tigers scored the first touchdown, leaving the Wynford fans suffering to get some points on the board. Finally, in the third quarter, Corey Brown delivered. T.J. Mohr’s extra point tied score (7-7), leaving fans with a sense of hope. The players muscled on, pushing the game into overtime.  The Galion Tigers again scored first adding another six points on the board but missed the extra point bringing the score to 13-7. Anxiety struck the Royal fans but the team never gave up hope. Only a few minutes were left on the clock when Keaton Teynor scored the final touchdown, tying the score at 13. Neck and neck once again, everyone was on the edge of their seats waiting for the extra point attempt as Mason Davis steadied the ball for T.J. Mohr. Anticipation was hanging in the air like the dust from the surrounding fields that hovered over the stadium; the suspense was almost tangible as T.J. lined himself up. He kicked the ball and it soared through the uprights flawlessly. The final score was Wynford-14, Galion-13. Instantly the Royals ran to the field rejoicing, jumping up and down with their hands in the air and yelling in victory. Wynford continued their home game winning streak as they move to 3-1 in the NCC. Their next game is at Colonel Crawford against the Eagles on Friday, October 18th.

FFA Blood Drive

Wynford Saves Lives

On October 9, 2013, from 7:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Wynford High School set up a blood drive at the high school with the American Red Cross Foundation. Mrs.Martin, Mr. Hoffman and the members of Wynford FFA set up this event and helped make it run smoothly. Any members in the Wynford community and the school were allowed to give blood if you met the requirements such as height, weight and iron levels. Sugary snacks were all around the gym for people who were a bit wobbly after giving blood to get their sugar levels back up. Around 27 people gave blood which collected 24 pints of blood. Wynford FFA did fall short of their goal of 31 pints, but the 24 pints collected will help save a life.

New Student Council for 2013

Mrs. Jennings, Family Consumer Science teacher, takes on a new role as 2013-2014 High School Student Council Advisor. This year the high school student council has many fun activities planned for the high school. Some upcoming activities are fall and winter homecoming, staff and student appreciation days, Veteran’s Day Assembly, Royal Reunion, and miscellaneous spirit days. If you would like to become involved with student council, you must fill out an application and return to Mrs. Jennings by May 2014 during re-election time. The student body will then vote for next years student council members and the results will be posted by the end of the 2014 school year. When asking Mrs. Jennings about her new position she said, “ I am very nervous but excited about the new things that are coming.” The student council senior candidates are Gage Roe, Brock Williamson, Meghan Harrer, Jake Glowaski, and Madison Graham. The junior candidates are Hannah Kocher, Brooke Miller, Kaleb Alspach, Hunter Miller, and Paige Kissling. Sophomore candidates are Anna Blank, Anna Leibengood, MacKenton Johnson, Jennifer Brown, and Kelsey Dunford. The freshman candidates are Seth Hoffman, Blake Williamson, Luke Scott, Tyler Glowaski, and Lynae Rausch. In the first meeting of the year, the entire membership elected officers; president, Lindsay Rausch; vice president Karlee Schiefer; secretary, Madison Graham; and treasurer, Brooke Miller. The student body is excited with Mrs. Jennings new role as advisor and looking forward to all the planned activities.

The Lady Royals Serve Defeat to The Lady Bulldogs

On October 8, 2013, the Lady Royals of Wynford High School hosted the Lady Bulldogs of Crestline High School. The game started off with Mr. Hurles, Wynford High School math teacher, singing The Star-Spangled Banner. This game was the Royals last home game of the season, which means senior night! Seniors: Amber Gottfried, Meghan Harrer, Beth Ogden, and Brenna Quinn were announced and given gifts from their teammates. The team will miss them tremendously but is hoping for success in their futures. Even though the night was filled with tears of the seniors leaving, the ladies still managed to take the win. The Royals took the Bulldogs in three sets: (25-9), (25-10), and (25-15). In Junior Varsity action, the JV won in two sets. The Lady Royals will be on the road at Riverdale on Thursday, October 10, at 5:30 p.m.

Junior High Student Council

New Junior High Student Council Members

The new members of this year’s Junior High Student Council have many plans for this school year. Wynford Junior High’s new 7th grade members are Olivia Grove, Chloe Radcliff, Josh Rose, Alexis White, Kelsie Williams, Payton Miller, and Tyler Phelps. The new 8th grade members are Bailey Alsphach, Arianna Brewster, James Chapman, Jenna Coffman, Shannon Crabtree, Wyatt Franklin, Cole Heinlen, Brionna Hill, Victoria Hoerig, Morgan Kapp, Mikinzee Pollard, Alexis Showers, Eleni Smock, Sami Strickland, Caleb Stone, Kennedy Teynor, and Mallory Voll. The 7th and 8th grade student council members have plans on doing fund raisers, such as a dodgeball tournament, a bake sale, and selling flowers and/or candy for Valentine’s Day. In terms of community service, they plan on doing a toy drive around Christmas, a can drive around Easter, and a trash pick up after sports games. They also have plans for recreational things like field day and a dance for the junior high students. The 7th and 8th graders also have some other things they plan to do, for example, they plan on doing a teacher appreciation week, a 6th grade tour, and some random acts of kindness. In all, the junior high student council members have a lot in store for this year.

Royals Defeat Eagles at Volley for the Cure Game

On October 3, 2013, the Wynford Royals volleyball team hosted the Volley for the Cure game against the Colonel Crawford Eagles. The Junior Varsity team defeated the Eagles in two games 25-16 and 25-14. In the Varsity game, the Royals came out on top in three games with scores of 25-13, 25-10, and 25-15. The Royals and the Eagles wore pink jerseys with their numbers on the back for breast cancer awareness. The Royals Varsity team all wore matching neon pink socks and shoe strings with matching tank top jerseys. The gym was packed full of Royal fans in pink with signs hanging on all the walls. Many other festivities took place during the Volley for the Cure game such as a pink king winner, raffle prizes and many more games. Junior High Volleyball Aces Colonel Crawford

On October 3, 2013, Wynford Junior High, seventh and eighth grade, played Colonel Crawford at Wynford Elementary School. The seventh grade took the Eagles in 2 sets: (25-7) and (25-13). The eighth grade also took the Eagles in 2 sets: (25-21) and (25-18). All four teams rocked a pink out theme for Breast Cancer Awareness Month which is October. The Jr. High Volleyball girls will be in action on Tuesday, October 8, at Crestline starting at 5 p.m.

Eighth Grade Football Sets Scoring Record

The ambience of the stadium was buzzing, Tuesday, October 1, 2013, as Wynfords eighth grade football team warmed up for their game against the Bucyrus Redmen.  Coach Barbuto said, “I thought the team played a great game. Every player on the team made a contribution to the victory.” The team had several impressive plays, including an astonishing touchdown

by Noah Nicholson that got people talking. Another flabbergasting touchdown was made by Zach Houck who kept a good three feet between himself and his pursuers as he raced towards the end zone, raising the score to 58-0. A few more scores from multiple players brought the score to 68-0. Cole Heinlen scored the final touchdown bringing the score to Wynford-74 and Bucyrus-0. The Royals continued to dominate the Redmen on the football field with the win. According to Coach Barbuto, “the Royals set a school record for points scored in a junior high football game with 74 points.” The game was exciting from start to finish for the crowd rooting for Wynford, but Bucyrus fans did not have the opportunity to be so rallied. Wynfords next opponent is the Crestline Bulldogs on October 8, 2013 at Crestline.

Wynford FFA Digs Their Way to Success

Soil is a non-renewable natural resource. This should make us think of how much we value this resource. Damage to the soil can disturb natures balance and prove a threat to life. On September 19, 2013 the Wynford FFA Chapter competed at the Crawford County Rural/Urban Soil Judging Contest. The contest was held at Windmans Farms. Wynford placed first in rural and second in urban judging. The students moving on to district soil judging for rural will be: Aaron Hand who placed first overall, Tessa Starner who placed third overall, and Grace Schiefer who placed fourth for Wynford. Austin Honaker and Tara Zinser did not place but will move on with the team. The urban soil judging team will also be going to districts as well. Those going to districts for urban judging will be: Tessa Starner who placed sixth overall, Loagan Neal who placed eighth overall, and  Callie Ruffener who placed tenth overall, and Madelyn Assenhimer was not able to place. Our district urban team placed 7th but sadly not moving on. The rural team placed 4th overall and going to state. The rural soil team will be competing at state level at 9a.m. in the Columbus area.

FORESTRY TEAM MOVES ON TO STATE

Did you know the amount of oxygen produced by an acre of trees per year equals the amount consumed by 18 people annually. One tree produces nearly 260 pounds of oxygen each year. On September 9th, 2013 the Wynford FFA Chapter competed at the District Forestry Contest. The contest was held at Camp Michael in Bucyrus, Ohio. There were 8 teams that competed. The contest covers 4 different sections: tree identification, general forest knowledge, chainsaw safety, and timber cruising. The team won the contest with Annika Gerlach, Aryn Copeland, Alexis Ross, and Luke Scott. Annika Gerlach placed first overall and Aryn Copeland placed 4th overall. The team of 4 will move on to compete at the State Forestry Contest held on Saturday, October 5, 2013 at Hocking Hills College.
