Wynford Recognizes Student-Athletes

Chris Solis, athletic director, wants to recognize Wynford student athletes by starting a new program for students in grades 9-12. All students who participate in a fall,  winter, or spring sport will have the opportunity to be recognized. In order to be eligible, each student must earn a 3.5 grade point average during the previous quarter of their current sport. Mr. Solis said, "Our athletes put in a tremendous amount of time in the classroom as well as outside of the classroom. I believe our athletes are students first and athletes second, and I want to see that they get recognition for this accomplishment." Wynford's first class of scholar athletes for cheerleading, cross country, golf, volleyball, and football are as follows:

Cheerleading: Allie Crall, Shelby Sipe, Taylor Leonhardt, Hannah Underwood, and Hannah Zeigler.

In the future, Mr. Solis would like this program to become part of the annual banquet for each sport. He wants each athlete to be recognized as a scholar athlete while participating in a sport at Wynford. Course Misleading to Runners

The Wynford Royals hosted their annual Wynford Invitational on Tuesday, September 2 at Wynford High School. There were a total of ten high school boys teams, and nine high school girls teams that competed in the invitational. At 4:30 p.m., the high school boys sprinted away from the start line and towards the finish line. As the runners took the challenge of the course, they accidentally missed running  a section before the second mile mark. “I thought I was following the right arrows,” explained Seth Karcher, a Wynford runner. Luckily, this mishap did not severely affect the final times for the runners. The Royals’ top finisher was Donnie Brooks, who placed 14th with a time of 17:30. Following him was Matt Hall who placed 40th and ran a time of 18:39. In 50th place was David Blank finishing with a 19:05 and in 68th was Seth Karcher with a 19:59.  Nathan Weithman ran a  26:17 and placed 104th overall. The girls high school race began at approximately 5:00 p.m. and took on the full course.  As the fans cheered  on the runners at the finish, Madi Schiefer came in first for the Wynford team placing 17th and running a 23:25. Cheyenne Tobias and Morgan Beaschler ran neck and neck at the finish placing one after the other, 28th and 29th, and both finishing with a 24:32. Aryn Copeland was next in 33rd and ran a time of 25:08. Kaleigh Swalley placed 74th overall with a time of 30:02. Ellie Richmond did not compete due to a hip injury from the previous meet.  After the girls were all finished, the boys junior high race was underway around 5:30 p.m. The first finisher for Wynford was Josh Rose, who placed 6th with a time of 12:10. Coming in 15th, Tim Chandler ran a 13:42. Next up was Gunner Coffman who ran a 14:49 and placed 30th.  Ryan Stevely, who placed 37th, finished with a time of 15:29. The girls junior high finished up the race and the top finisher for the Royals was Tricia Morr, who placed 28th with a 16:59. Right after Tricia, Annie Feinning ran a 17:04 placing 29th. Katherine Blank came in 34th running a time of 18:09 and Emma Lohr placed 45th overall with a time of 21:47. The junior high and high school teams plan to take on the famous Tiffin Carnival on Saturday, September 6 and travel to Lucas on September 9.

Cross Country’s Season Comes to an End

Wynford Cross Country Seniors

The cross country team had their awards banquet to bring their season to an end. The team had many accomplishments throughout the season. The girls’ team made it through districts and into regionals. They were the only NCC team to make it to regionals. Ellie Richmond placed 28th in regionals which did not allow her proceed to state. Only the top 16 regional places make it to state. Ellie Richmond and Madi Schiefer were first team all NCC. Sarah Hoffman and Rachel Redolf were both named honorable mention all NCC. Girls who received their first varsity letters in cross country were Aryn Copeland, Kaliegh Swalley, and Madi Schiefer. Ellie Richmond received her third letter for the royals. Girls who received their fourth year letters at Wynford were Sara Hoffman, Maddy Graham, and Rachel Redolf. Maddy Assenheimer received her certificate of participation. 

Wynford Girls Cross Country Regional Qualifier Team

The boys had three runners named honorable mention all NCC: Mark Pfeifer, Jacob Hord, and Donnie Brooks. Boys who received their first varsity letters were Donnie Brooks and Ethan Stuckey. Matt Hall received his second varsity letter for the Royals. The third year letter winners were Jacob Hord and David Blank. The fourth year varsity letter winners for the boys’ cross country team were Mark Pfeifer and Michael Shupp. Jack Reed, Cole Brause, Nathan Weithman, and Caleb Rettig received their certificates of participation. The cross country teams did well this season and improved from last year.

Richmond Takes First in Last NCC Meet

The cross country team competed at the last NCC meet ever on Saturday, October 12, 2013 at Amens Reservoir in Galion, Ohio. The brisk morning started off with the high school boys finishing 5th out of 7 teams. Our leading senior runners were Mark Pfeifer (15th, 18:44:55) Jacob Hord (16th, 18:46:99) for 2nd team NCC.  Honorable mention honors went to Donnie Brooks (19th, 18:51:28). Still going strong in the race was Ellie Richmond who won the girls race with a time of 20:44:91 and received 1st team NCC. Finishing a few spots behind Ellie was Madison Schiefer (7th, 22:20:84) taking the last spot for 1st team NCC. Wynford’s remaining top five scorers were Rachel Redolf (18th, 23:19:21) and Sara Hoffman (20th, 23:40:52) taking honorable mention honors. Madison Graham (22nd, 23:49:81) who sadly missed out on the NCC awards. Our girls placed 3rd out of 6 teams and missed being runner up by 3 points. Our medalist in junior high girls was Shay Miller (9th, 15:06:12) and the team placed 4th. On the junior high boys team, Josh Rose was also a medalist placing 9th with a time of 12:57:20 and the team placed 2nd. The junior high season is sadly over but the varsity teams compete in the district race in Galion on October 19th for possible regional qualifying.

Cross Country Runners Tear It Up at County Meet.

Wynford runners ran very well on the 17th of september at the Amman’s Reservoir in Galion, Ohio. The high school boys ran at 4:30 in very hot conditions but they pushed through it and came out runners up at the county meet. Mark Pfeifer lead the team finishing 6th with a time of 17:50. Freshman Donnie Brooks came in 11th with a time of 18:37 and senior Jacob Hord followed him with a time of 18:41. Still staying high in the placing were Michael Shupp finishing 19th with a 19:36 and placing 5th for the Royals was Matt Hall finishing 23rd with a time of 19:44. The boys were very proud of all their times and coming in 2nd in the county was a great accomplishment for the team.

The high school girls followed the boys race. The Royals still stayed strong as Ellie Richmond was the county winner for girls with a time of 20:55.  That was her best time so far this year. Freshman Madi Schiefer was only a few spots behind her taking 4th with a time of 21:39. Other Wynford runners finishing in the top 20 were Rachel Redolf (24:02, 17th overall) Sara Hoffman (24:34, 20th overall). The high school girls placed 3rd out of 6 teams. Anyone finishing in the top 20 in high school races are medalist.

Our boys junior high team placed 3rd also with Seth Karcher taking 9th, Josh Rose 10th, Tim Chandler 16th, Noah Smith 17th, Kyle Koon 18th, and rounding out the team was Ryan Stevely finishing 25th.

The last race of the evening was the junior high girls.  Shay Miller took 1st place in the junior high event and all Wynford runners improved on their times.  The Wynford Cross Country team will be back in action next Saturday the 28th at Buckeye Central starting at 9 a.m.

Fall Meet the Team Night

The Wynford community and parents came out in full force tonight to support all the fall athletes.  All the coaches introduced each player on all the fall sports for the upcoming 2013-2014 season.  The cheerleaders put on a great event and had many activities for all in attendance.  Some activities involved in the event were from car smashing, dance contest, and pie in the face.  The cheerleaders each performed dance and cheer routines for the fans. The food in the concession stand was delicious and tasty.
