Presidential "March Madness"

"Presidential Madness"

I am conducting a simulation on presidents/presidential hopefuls in all of my classes. The main idea is to "answer" the question of how well presidents/hopefuls from different eras would do if they competed against each other in an election.  I am using the format of the March Madness Bracket to conduct this simulation.  Students will be required to complete this project in an effort to educate them about the presidency in a non-traditional manner.

I will be using the progression of the actual tournament to update the presidential bracket.
For example: George Washington is the #1 seed in the Midwest Region.  His "success" throughout the tournament will depend on the school that is actually seeded #1 in that region.

The assignment is broken into 2 parts

• Physical Bracket

1. Students will fill out the attached bracket of presidents/hopefuls, making predictions on how well each president/hopeful will progress throughout the tournament.
2. Accurately predicting the winner is not determined in the grade.

• Written Portion

1. Students will label their Final Four picks on the “Written Portion”
2. 3 facts are to be given for each Final Four pick demonstrating why that president/hopeful is worthy of becoming the “presidential champion”
3. The students will write one paragraph explaining who they picked as the “presidential champion” and why that person is worthy of beating every other president/hopeful in the tournament.

Students will update their bracket in real time during the actual tournament.  A space on the back wall of the classroom will be used to monitor the progress.

In conclusion, the intent of the project is to have students familiarize themselves with our presidents other than a face and number.

Last night the new members were inducted into the Wynford National Honor Society. An induction ceremony was held in the auditorium recognizing the accomplishments of these new members. Punch and cake were served following the ceremony.

New School Year

The start of the 2015-2016 school year is under way at Wynford.  The high school and junior high students rolled into the building full of excitement and were ready for some changes. New faces and and the changing of internal positions have made the administration and staff happy with how smoothly the year has begun.  The new faces that have contributed to the staff and the smooth running of year are Andrew Amlin (social studies), Jamee Burke (special education), and Jason Engel (physical education and health).  Internally there were some changes with administration. Chris Solis moved from athletic director to junior high principal and Tim Ehresman took the role as athletic director. Everyone on the Wynford staff is looking forward to working with your child and making this a successful year.

National Honor Society Induction Ceremony

The National Honor Society induction ceremony for new members took place on December 8, 2014 in the Wynford High school auditorium. After the ceremony, cake and punch were provided for the members and their family in the cafeteria. Becoming a member of National Honor Society takes a lot of work but is very rewarding. In order to become a member of National Honor Society, a student must have a minimum GPA of 3.5, contribute volunteer hours, show leadership skills, possess good characteristics that help improve a school, and pass a teacher evaluation process. There are not many students that receive the honor of becoming a member of National Honor Society because of all the high standards and requirements. Hannah Kocher, Allie Crall, Kalyn Heinle, Trey Smith, Brooke Miller, Chelsea Mosely, Tessa Starner, and Morgan Hardymon were the current members from 2013-2014 that inducted the new members. The newly inducted members were Margaret Willford, Aryn Copeland, Alexis Phonchone, Alyssa Harrer, Jennifer Brown, Carlee Leonhardt, Chloe Ulmer, Ellie Richmond, Allison Heacock, Lainie Wright, and Taylor Baumberger. The members of National Honor Society will continue to work hard making our school and community a better place.

Believe It or Not

On October 14, 2014, Brian Drake came to Wynford High School and performed magic tricks or illusions for our faculty and student body wanting to share a specific message. He did three different tricks that caught the student bodies attention. The illusion which caught the students attention the most was when he looked for a student volunteer to come forward and write down a name that was special to them. Brian volunteered Samantha Peck, and she wrote down a name. The name was put in a box and placed on a table with a tablecloth. After she put the box on the table it started to elevate! After the table elevated, he then guessed the name that Samantha wrote on the paper by spray painting the name on a sheet hanging in the gym. He guessed the name correctly, which was Jeffrey. 
Brian was asked, “What inspired you to become an illusionist?” He replied “ Well, I’ve always wanted to be an illusionist, and I followed through with the dream I had while attending college.” Neva Patrick was responsible for bringing the idea and message to Mr. Holbrooks attention. Brian came into our school and shared his story behind his illusions and message. Neva was asked, “What made you want to ask Mr. Holbrook to have an

illusionist come to Wynford?” She replied, “His illusions and message behind the illusions wouldn’t just interest people, they would have an effect on our students in a different way than other assemblies would.” Neva thought Brian’s illusions and message were amazing. She said, “His performance was amazing, I am really excited to see him do another performance at church tonight.” The story behind Brian’s illusions were to make good choices and to not go along with whatever anyone says or asks you to do. The choices you make as an individual will not only affect you, but many others as well.

Four Wynford Students Attend Leadership Conference

On Tuesday, October 07, 2014, Wynford Royal student athletes represented Wynford High School at an OHSAA Leadership Conference. The Royals who attended the conference were Ellie Richmond, Hunter Miller, Alyssa Harrer, and Alex Crall who were nominated by Wynford coaches and the students peers. Ellie Richmond said, “I was very grateful to have the opportunity to represent Wynford High School at this leadership conference.” Amy Taylor-Sheldon accompanied the students to the event as the adult supervisor. There were several well-known speakers talking about Qualities of Leadership, Personal Accountability, Thinking Like an Athlete, Leadership Development, Ingredients of Success, and Distracted Driving. Hunter Miller was asked, How was listening to the speakers beneficial to becoming a better leader?” He said, “Most of those people are as successful as you could dream of being, and it was cool to see how the athletes were also successful in the classroom.” Alyssa Harrer said, “My favorite speaker was Jerome Singleton because he said, ‘I wouldn’t give up no matter what, and if my success wasn’t working in the classroom then I would focus on my sports, and when sports weren’t working, then I focused in the classroom.”’ After listening to Qualities of Leadership, Alex Crall commented,“I learned leadership skills that can help improve our school.” These four students are going to bring what they learned and apply it inside and outside of our school to improve leadership qualities in our student athletes.

Wynford Recognizes Student-Athletes

Chris Solis, athletic director, wants to recognize Wynford student athletes by starting a new program for students in grades 9-12. All students who participate in a fall,  winter, or spring sport will have the opportunity to be recognized. In order to be eligible, each student must earn a 3.5 grade point average during the previous quarter of their current sport. Mr. Solis said, "Our athletes put in a tremendous amount of time in the classroom as well as outside of the classroom. I believe our athletes are students first and athletes second, and I want to see that they get recognition for this accomplishment." Wynford's first class of scholar athletes for cheerleading, cross country, golf, volleyball, and football are as follows:

In the future, Mr. Solis would like this program to become part of the annual banquet for each sport. He wants each athlete to be recognized as a scholar athlete while participating in a sport at Wynford. Welcome Back

Welcome Back Students

Its great to see everyone excited to be back for the start of the 2014-15 school year. Many new faces have been added to the Wynford community. Please make the following new staff members feel welcomed.

Brian Shupp replaces Jim Sebring as our districts bus mechanic. Bryan previously worked for the city of Shelby, serving as a mechanic for the city's fleet of vehicles. He is a Wynford graduate and a current resident of the district.

Jordan Oliver will teacher high school social studies. He is a Wynford graduate and earned his Bachelor's degree from Bowling Green State University.

Joe Staab graduated this past spring from Heidelberg College and will begin his educational career at Wynford teaching high school and junior high math and science.

Erin Duffy taught at Mansfield St. Peter's last year and will assume the high school art position.

Carla Colon is a first year teacher who brings a wealth of experience in foreign language instruction as Wynford's new Spanish teacher.

Mark DeLaney will teach high school physical education and serve as the boys head basketball coach. He previously taught and coached at Marion Local and Fredericktown High Schools.

Matt Safford comes to Wynford with 15 years of music education experience, most recently in the Huron Local School District. He will be the vocal musical instructor for our district.

Bobby Davis recently graduated from Heidelberg College and will work as our junior high social studies teacher.

Erin Emser a recent Bowling Green State University graduate will teach high school English.

Students Waiting on Board Approval for England Trip

Wynford Plans Trip to London, England for the Year 2016

Wynford’s English department is planning a once-in-a-lifetime oversea trip for the junior and senior classes of 2016. The plan is to travel to London, England for a nine day adventure, exploring several of England’s greatest tourist attractions: Big Ben, Windsor Castle, Shakespeare’s Birthplace, Stonehenge, and even the Crown Jewels! The trip will be run through the company CHA, renowned for their specialization in educational tours for schools. This nine day excursion comes at the price of $3,749, but keep in mind the more money raised from fundraising, the smaller the price tag will be. Included in the price would be round trip airfare, seven nights in three and four star hotels (days one and nine are counted as departure days), a full-time CHA tour guide, breakfast and dinner every day, private motor-coach transportation, and guided sightseeing tours of the locations listed above (as well as some other additional places). Adults can also chaperone for the trip for an additional $342. More information, and fundraising progress will be disclosed as the trip draws closer, for any additional information contact Mr. O’ Brien. Wynford’s students are eager for the opportunity to travel across the Atlantic Ocean to the foreign land of England and learn about the historical sights and locations they will be able to view, in person, during this unique once-in-a-lifetime experience.
