Early Exit From Playoffs

The Wynford Royals ran into a tough Delta Panthers team in the first round of the state playoffs losing 21-15 and exiting the playoffs earlier than antipacting. Delta's 6-4 record was no indication of a weak team. The Panthers used a steady ground attack of B. Storeholder and J. Beverly which the Royals had difficulty controlling.
The Royals got out to an early lead on a 13 yard run by Zach Hoffman and two point conversion on a trick extra point play taking an 8-0. Wynford looked as if they were going to take an early 15-0 but a block in the back penalty negated the touchdown.
The Panthers got on the board just before halftime on a 6 yard run by Storeholder and the kick after was good bringing the score to 8-7 still in favor of the Royals. Delta put together two scoring drives during the second half both by Beverly giving the Panthers a 21-8 lead. Beverly's second score came after the Royals gave Delta a second chance on a face mask penalty on strong goal line stand.

Wynford would not give up. With roughly 8:00 left in the game, the Royals got good field position after the kick off and took the ball down the field and scored. Hoffman's 7 yard run brought the Royals to within seven at 21-15 with 6:49 left to play.
A strong defensive stand by the Royals gave them an opportunity to tie the game. With no time outs left and time ticking away, an interception ended the Royals playoff dreams. Wynford's season comes to an end with an impressive 9-2 record and another N10 championship.

Royals Plow Eagles

On a wet and windy night, the Wynford Royals defeated the Colonel Crawford Eagles 41-14 and remained in control of the Iron Plow Trophy. Each schools FFA organization came up with the idea 2 years ago and it has become a tradition during the rivalry. Wynford improves to 2-1 while the Eagles fall to 2-1 taking their first defeat of the season. 

The Royals were lead by an impressive ground attack with Zach Hoffman and Nick Looker leading the way with a combined total of 289 rushing yards. Hoffman was the leading rusher with 176 yards while Looker added 113 yards. Wynford's 6 scores were all rushing with 3 each by Hoffman and Looker. Hoffman also contributed 4 of 7 passing on the wet evening for 102 yards.

The first quarter looked as if the game was going to be a close match up between the rivalries. The Royals got on the board first scoring quickly on a 15 yard run by Hoffman after the Eagles fumbled on their first possession. Colonel Crawford came right back scoring on their next possession making it 7-7.

The Eagles stopped the Royals on 4th and short and connected on a 10 yard pass play to increase their lead to 14-7. This was the last of the Eagles scoring on the night. The Royals defense was just to much for the Eagles. Wynford managed to tie the game at 14-14 before half with 4 seconds remaining on a 6 yard run by Looker.

The Royals offensively plowed through the Eagles defense in the second half and held Crawford to just 9 total yards offense.

This was a great victory for the Royals and they will host the Carey Blue Devils Friday night on senior night.

Wynfords Playoff Run Ends

The Wynford Royals ran into a very strong and physical Defiance Tinora Rams in the regional finals on very chilly evening for football. The Royals could not generate any offense the entire evening while the Tinora Rams were held under their normal scoring average by the Wynford defense. Wynford ends their season with a 11-2 record while the Tinora Rams improve to 13-0 and move on to the state semifinals at Ohio State University with a 17-0 victory. Five turnovers lead to the scoreless night for the Royals (3 interceptions and 2 fumbles). 
Each team struggled to find any offensive continuity as both defenses showed their strengths in the first quarter with neither team crossing the goal line. Tinora got on the board first with 11:09 left in the second quarter with a 31 yard field goal from the Rams kicker, Josh Camp, on a 7 play 43 yard drive giving Tinora a 3-0 lead. 
Wynford's defensive strengths continued to show why the Royals were in the regional finals. Coach Gabe Helbert said, "Offensively we could not find a rhythm, but our defense played extremely well against a very talented and fast opponent." The Royals still gave themselves an opportunity against the Rams by holding them to just one score in the second quarter. Tinora went into halftime with a 10-0 lead with 1:17 left in the second quarter on a 10 yard run by Riley Nadel as he scampered off tackle and headed for the pylon. Wynford had difficulty stopping the Rams on offense as they continually gave the Wynford defense a steady dose of off-tackle sweep plays all night long. 
The Wynford defense continued to hang tough during the second half only allowing the Rams to score once with 9:24 left in the third quarter on a 25 yard run by T.J. Gares. The 6 play 67 yard drive and the extra point gave Tinora a 17-0 lead which was all they needed to advance to the state semifinals. 
Coach Gabe Helbert was extremely proud of his team. "We put ourselves in a position to play in a regional championship, but it just was not our night." The Royals were lead by quarterback, Keaton Teynor, on offense with 11 of 24 for 113 yards passing and 66 yards on 22 carries rushing. 
A very successful season comes to an end for the Royals as many tears and hugs were shared after a lengthy post game discussion where the coaching staff shared how proud they were of the entire team. Coach Helbert said,


"They are a great group. We don't have any superstars, but they play football the way it is supposed to be played."

The Royals Beat Expectations, Advancing to Week 13

Friday, November 14 the Royals took on the Van Buren Black Knights securing their spot in the third round of the state football playoffs. Van Buren started off strong despite the frigid temperatures with the first touchdown of the game early in the second quarter. The Black Knights added the extra point making the score 7-0 with 11:14 left in the half. The Royals did not let Van Buren’s led discourage them. Wynford drove right down the field on its next possession when Keaton Teynor’s one yard run pushed through the Black Knight’s defensive line scoring the first Royal touchdown of the night. Jalon Brown’s attempted extra point failed. The Royals trailed the Black Knights with a score of 7-6. 
The Royals special teams played a huge part in the victory by recovering an onside kick and converting a fake punt. Wynford drove 42 yards in seven plays leading to another touchdown by Teynor. The attempted two point conversion was no good. The Royals led 12-7 going into the second half. 
The energetic atmosphere did not die down as the second half of the game began. The third quarter went scoreless until Hayden Rhoades rushed the ball four yards to earn the Royals their third touchdown of the night with 48 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Brown’s extra point attempt failed giving the Royals the lead to start the fourth quarter,18-7. 
Wynford continued to play off their momentum when Teynor converted on a 9-yard run with 4:17 left in the game to score the final touchdown of the game for the Royals. This gave the Royals a 25-7 lead, but Van Buren did not leave without a fight, rushing 48 yards bringing the score to 25-15 with 3:49 left in the fourth period. The Royals gave the ball up on downs giving the Black Knights another opportunity to score. The Royals defense held Van Buren on the Royals one-yard line as they turned the ball over on downs with only a few seconds remaining in the game. 

The Royals head to a regional championship coming out victorious, 25-15. Wynford’s coach, Gabe Helbert, motivated his team for the next battle by reminding them, “You guys are one of four teams in Wynford’s history to make it to week 13.” Helbert also emphasised, “You have the opportunity to be one of two teams to make it to week 14.” Wynford’s opportunity to be one of two teams happens on Friday, November 21 at 7:30 pm when the Royals take on the Defiance Tinora Rams at Ohio Northern University. The game will be called by Jim Radke and Jeff Roberts live on WQEL and wqel.com.

Wynford Marches Forward in Playoffs

 After beating Delphos Jefferson 29-12 on Friday, November 7th, Wynford moves on in the state football playoff run. Next Friday night, the Royals will play Van Buren at Tiffin Columbian High School with game time at 7:30 p.m. 
The Royals got on the board first with a Nick Looker 4 yard touchdown run completing a 58 yard drive. Wynford surprised everyone with a fake extra point. The snap from Trey Stone went to the holder Austin Shutler who snapped directly to Jalon Brown the kicker. Trey Stone was an eligible receiver because he was on the end of the line of scrimmage due to the Royals shifting of their lineman. Brown rolled to his right and completed the pass to Stone in the endzone for the two point conversion giving the Royals an 8-0 lead. 
The Royals scored their second touchdown during the second quarter when Tony Watson, 2 receptions for 56 yards, caught a tipped ball pass from Keaton Teynor. Watson’s 51 yard reception gave Wynford a 15-0 lead before Delphos Jefferson got their first touchdown on a 5 yard run. This gave the Wildcats a chance closing the Royals lead to 15-6 after the two point conversion attempt failed. Takoda Wilburn had 1 reception for 36 yards which lead to Hayden Rhodes scoring their second touchdown in the second quarter crushing the hopes of the Wildcats. Wynford took a 22-6 lead into halftime and never looked back. Rhodes made a big impact for the Royals rushing attack with 11 rushing attempts for 100 yards while the team ran for 290 yards on 56 attempts. 

Neither of the teams were triumphant in scoring during the third quarter as both defenses showed their presences. The Wildcats scored their second touchdown in the fourth quarter trying to get back in the game, but with only 4:07 left on the clock it would take a miracle to beat the Royals. As time was running out, the Royals scored the last touchdown with 2:02 left on the clock on a 21 yard run by quarterback Keaton Teynor. Teynor had 26 rushes for 104 yards and 4 of 7 passing for 96 yards on the night. 
This secured the victory for the mighty Royals and a continuation of the season. Royals Cap Off Season with Third Straight Shutout

The Royals took the field, pumped up, looking to keep the Copper Kettle. It was a rainy, breezy, and frozen night, but the loyal Wynford fans still showed up to support the Royals. As the football team came back on the field after warm-ups, the loyal fans rose to their feet and welcomed the team with an uproar of cheers. 
The Royals defense stopped the Redmen on their first possession forcing a punt. The snap sailed over the punter’s head and was recovered by the Royals on their own one yard line. The Royals offense came out on the field looking to get on the board quickly after the crucial Redmen turnover. The Royals did just that. Keaton Teynor ran the ball in for a Royal touchdown and Jalen Brown’s point after was good, giving the Royals a 7-0 lead. The lovely weather conditions and the Royals defensive presence affected the Redmen passing attack keeping the score 7-0 at halftime. 
Wynford came out aggressive in the third quarter scoring three times. They moved the ball down the field on their first possession, scoring with a 2 yard run by Nick Looker. Browns extra point attempt was no good, giving Wynford a 13-0 lead. Wynford continued to apply pressure to Bucyrus’ quarterback, Cole Murtiff, when Wynford’s Zach Hendrickson sacked him in the end zone for a safety, giving the Royals a 15-0 lead. Finishing out the third quarter scoring for the Royals was Jalon Brown, kicking a 20 yard field goal, increasing the Wynford lead to 18-0.
In the fourth quarter, Teynor ran the ball for a 20 yard touchdown with 4:37 remaining, giving

the loyal Royal fans more to cheer about. Brown’s kick was no good, giving the Royals a 24-0 lead. Wynford coach Gabe Helbert decided to make substitutions late in the fourth quarter when back up quarterback Zach Hoffman scamper 56 yards on a designed quarterback keeper with 13 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. The point after failed, giving the Royals a 30-0 victory over the Redmen. The remaining fans that continued to brave the inclimate weather joined in the celebration as Wynford continued its dominance in the Bucyrus - Wynford rivalry by winning its 17th straight copper kettle game. The Royals take the inaugural Northern 10 championship with a 8-0 league record and finished 9-1 overall. 
The Wynford Royals will be heading into the postseason, finishing third in Division VI, Region 20 behind Defiance Tinora and Lima Central Catholic. Wynford earned home field advantage facing off against the 6th ranked Delphos Jefferson Wildcats (8-2) this Friday night at 7:30 pm. Tickets are on sale during school hours, 7:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m, through Friday. Wynford Seniors Win in Impressive Fashion

The Wynford Royals played their last regular season home game Friday, October 24th. Nick Looker scored the first touchdown for the Royals on a 9 yard run, and Jalon Brown added the extra point giving the Royals an early 7-0 lead. The Royals increased their lead when Keaton Teynor completed a 33 yard pass to Kody Wilburn bringing the first quarter score to 14-0 in favor of Wynford. The crowd and the cheerleaders, along with the senior dads cheered on  their sons as they played their last home football game as a Wynford Royal. In the second quarter, Teynor converted on a two yard run making the score 21-0 in favor of Wynford at halftime. Buckeye Central slowed the Royals offense in the second half where Teynor and Hayden Rhoades were the only scores. Teynors touchdown was a 7 yard run while Rhoades was a 14 yard run giving the Royals a 35-0 win. The Royals continued their defensive dominance by holding its opponent scoreless and improving to 8-1 on the season. The excitement and intensity level of the Royals was contagious throughout the entire game as the Royals battled and defeated the Bucks. Wynford travels to rival Bucyrus Friday night in a key copper kettle match up and the outright Northern 10 championship on the line.

The Royals Continue Their Winning Streak

Despite the rain and cold of the football game, Friday October 3rd, the Royals easily defeated the Crestline Bulldogs. Before the game, the 2014 fall homecoming queen and king were crowned. Ellie Richmond was given the title of homecoming queen, and the king title was received by David Blank. The rain let up just in time for kick off. The first touchdown was scored early in the first quarter by Wynford senior, Austin Shutler. The extra point was added by Jalon Brown. The Royals ended the first quarter with three touchdowns, gaining one extra point with each, making the score 21-0. Wynford was playing a more technical and cohesive game, than Crestline. The next quarter was even more successful for the Royals, scoring four touchdowns and three extra points. This brought the score to 48-0 going into the second half. Due to the new OHSAA rule, the clock was only stopped for official’s timeouts in the second half with a team leading by more than 30 points. This gave the Royals enough time to score two more touchdowns, one in each quarter with mainly junior varsity players playing. The Bulldogs pushed through Wynford’s defense to gain a touchdown late in the fourth quarter, ending the game with a score of 62-6. Austin Shutler led the team with two touchdowns, as well as 106 of Wynford’s 223 yards receiving. Zack Hoffman had a total of 67 yards rushing and one touchdown, followed closely by Cole Fortner. Fortner contributed 50 yards rushing and scored one touchdown. Keaton Teynor made the leader board, passing for 286 yards. Kody Wilburn strengthened the Royals defense with four tackles and two sacks. Hayden Rhoades had three tackles and one sack. This win put the Royals at 5-0 in the Northern 10 (N10) Conference, and 5-1 for the season thus far. The Royals will be back in action Friday, October 10th, 2014, at Seneca East.

Homecoming Ceremonies

The Queen and King are Crowned

The rain paused long enough for the king and queen candidates to enjoy their homecoming parade with the car tops down. The crowd was cheering them on and waving as they passed by. All the girls were dolled up with their hair and makeup done and their nice outfits. The gentlemen looked handsome, too. The cars drove around the track to the visitors side allowing the candidates to get out. Friends and family lined the sidelines with flashing cameras coming from all directions. The candidates were introduced as they walked across the field. Ellie Richmond escorted by Brydan Lohr was first to walk. At this point, the rain began to fall slowly and increased with intensity as Brooke Miller and David Blank along with Samantha Lambert and Trey Smith were escorted across the field. Up next, our Russian foreign exchange student, Marta Kovalyova, was escorted by Hayden Rhodes. Last, Hannah Kocher was escorted by Kaleb Alspach. Following the candidates was the 2013 fall homecoming queen, Meghan Harrer. The 2013 fall homecoming king, Gage Roe, was unable to attend. As the crowd waited with excitement, Ellie Richmond was crowned the 2014 homecoming queen and David Blank was crowned the 2014 homecoming king. Meghan Harrer crowned them both while the rain continued to wash away the dolled up look. The homecoming ceremonies were followed by the homecoming dance on Saturday night and fun was held by all!

Eagles Soar Into Royal Country

The Wynford Royals and Liberty Benton Eagles have a history when it comes to the playoffs. There was a lot of pride coming along with this game. The atmosphere at the stadium was filled with excitement. In the first quarter, the Eagles scored first giving them an early lead, 7-0. The Eagles scored again in the first quarter with a pass from quarterback Nathan Craft, giving them the lead, 14-0. Liberty Benton added another 7 points giving them a 21-0 lead. Mid-way through the second quarter, the Royals finally add their first 6 points of the year when Hayden Rhodes ran the ball for four yards with the extra point just missing. Going into halftime, the score was 21-6 Liberty Benton.  There were no touchdowns in the third quarter, leaving the score at 21-6 heading into the fourth. In the fourth quarter, Liberty Benton intercepts Keaton Teynor’s pass and returns the ball for a touchdown, kick is good. The Eagles led 28-6. This is where the game would end giving the Royals their first loss of the year. The Royals are back in action next Friday at home with Ridgedale.

Wynford’s annual senior night was scorched by the Liberty Benton Eagles. The Eagles defeated the Royals 28-6 in the first week of Friday night football. During senior night, all of the seniors that are active in any fall sport were announced before the football game. The seniors walked down the middle of the football field supported by a family member(s).  Senior night was a very emotional night for many of the seniors, and their parent(s). Wynford High School is proud of our senior class this year. Go Royals!

Royals Outlast Tigers in Overtime

The Wynford Royals Varsity football team hosted the Galion Tigers on Friday, October 11, 2013. The game was an even match up with neither team scoring until the second quarter.  The Tigers scored the first touchdown, leaving the Wynford fans suffering to get some points on the board. Finally, in the third quarter, Corey Brown delivered. T.J. Mohr’s extra point tied score (7-7), leaving fans with a sense of hope. The players muscled on, pushing the game into overtime.  The Galion Tigers again scored first adding another six points on the board but missed the extra point bringing the score to 13-7. Anxiety struck the Royal fans but the team never gave up hope. Only a few minutes were left on the clock when Keaton Teynor scored the final touchdown, tying the score at 13. Neck and neck once again, everyone was on the edge of their seats waiting for the extra point attempt as Mason Davis steadied the ball for T.J. Mohr. Anticipation was hanging in the air like the dust from the surrounding fields that hovered over the stadium; the suspense was almost tangible as T.J. lined himself up. He kicked the ball and it soared through the uprights flawlessly. The final score was Wynford-14, Galion-13. Instantly the Royals ran to the field rejoicing, jumping up and down with their hands in the air and yelling in victory. Wynford continued their home game winning streak as they move to 3-1 in the NCC. Their next game is at Colonel Crawford against the Eagles on Friday, October 18th.
