Wynford Joins in National FFA Celebration

On Monday, February 17th, Wynford FFA (Future Farmers of America) students began to celebrate National FFA Week with an ice cream eating contest and by wearing an FFA t-shirt. National FFA Week is where everyone celebrates FFA throughout the country and starts February 15th and last until February 22nd. There are currently about seventy students in the Wynford FFA program. Unfortunately, Wynford could not do the Tuesday activities because school was canceled. On Wednesday the 19th, FFA members dressed in their official uniforms and held a ping pong activity. On Thursday, February 20th, students will wear officer polos, participate in corn hole games, and hold a FFA meeting after school which includes a leadership activity. Also, they will hold a teacher appreciation day on Thursday. The teachers of Wynford will get to enjoy some delicious ice cream and homemade pies after school. Friday, February 21st, is drive your tractor to school day and will have a balloon pop activity. Watch out for those “Aggies”. They can get pretty excited during FFA week especially on tractor day.
FFA Raises Money and Donates Food to the Less Fortunate

On Friday, November 22, 2013, the annual senior vs. staff volleyball game took place. Each attendee donated three to five cans of non-perishable goods, or a minimum cash donation of three dollars to the Salvation Army. The confident staff strutted into the gym with their chins held high and their chests puffed out with Royal Pride. They flexed their “can-do” muscles in an attempt to intimidate their youthful senior opponents who were adorned in war paint and sweat bands. The seniors could not seem to catch up to the quickly advancing staff until Autumn Tea served the ball for them and raised their
score with several aces. The seniors attempted to rid the staff of their traditional triumph but failed to break the cycle. Now the opportunity to end the reign of the Royal staff lies on the backs of the 2015 seniors. Will they win, or will the staff achieve victory once again and continue to rule on the volleyball court?

District Forestry was held on September 12th at Camp Michael in Bucyrus Ohio. The Wynford FFA team placed first in the district. Annika Gerlach placed first overall with Aryn Copeland close behind her in fourth. State Forestry was held on October 5th at Hocking Hills College in Nelsonville, Ohio. The members who represented the Wynford chapter were Aryn Copeland, Ethan Stuckey, Annika Gerlach, and Luke Scott. Luke Scott lead the team placing 53rd overall. The team placed 17th out of 38 participating teams.
The District soils contest was held on September 26th in Richland County. The Urban team placed seventh with Tessa Starner leading the team. Other team members consisted of Callie Ruffener, Madalyn Assenheimer, and Loagan Neal. Freshman FFA members Austin Honaker, Grace Scheifer, Tara Zinser, and Aaron Hand represented the Rural team at districts. The team placed fourth overall with Grace Schiefer leading the team. Grace placed fifth overall in the district contest. On October 12th The Wynford FFA chapter rural soil judging team attended State Soil judging. The contest was held at Farm Science Review in London, Ohio and the team placed 33rd.
The FFA and Band hosted the annual Chicken BBQ this fall on October 5, 2013 at the high
school. The BBQ was a success and all the meals were sold. There were 900 meals sold that evening. Thank you to everyone that supported the FFA/Band, and we hope to see you next year.
The FFA chapter’s annual fruit sale started October 17th. The sale will close on November 17th with plans for the fruit, nuts, canned meat, and BBQ sauce to arrive on December 4th. Fruit will be ready to go home on December 5th. A form can be found on the home page under announcements with all of our items for sale. Please call 419-562-7828 ext. 228 to place your order.
Wynford Saves Lives

On October 9, 2013, from 7:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Wynford High School set up a blood drive at the high school with the American Red Cross Foundation. Mrs.Martin, Mr. Hoffman and the members of Wynford FFA set up this event and helped make it run smoothly. Any members in the Wynford community and the school were allowed to give blood if you met the requirements such as height, weight and iron levels. Sugary snacks were all around the gym for people who were a bit wobbly after giving blood to get their sugar levels back up. Around 27 people gave blood which collected 24 pints of blood. Wynford FFA did fall short of their goal of 31 pints, but the 24 pints collected will help save a life.
Wynford FFA Digs Their Way to Success

Soil is a non-renewable natural resource. This should make us think of how much we value this resource. Damage to the soil can disturb natures balance and prove a threat to life. On September 19, 2013 the Wynford FFA Chapter competed at the Crawford County Rural/Urban Soil Judging Contest. The contest was held at Windmans Farms. Wynford placed first in rural and second in urban judging. The students moving on to district soil judging for rural will be: Aaron Hand who placed first overall, Tessa Starner who placed third overall, and Grace Schiefer who placed fourth for Wynford. Austin Honaker and Tara Zinser did not place but will move on with the team. The urban soil judging team will also be going to districts as well. Those going to districts for urban judging will be: Tessa Starner who placed sixth overall, Loagan Neal who placed eighth overall, and Callie Ruffener who placed tenth overall, and Madelyn Assenhimer was not able to place. Our district urban team placed 7th but sadly not moving on. The rural team placed 4th overall and going to state. The rural soil team will be competing at state level at 9a.m. in the Columbus area.
FORESTRY TEAM MOVES ON TO STATE

Did you know the amount of oxygen produced by an acre of trees per year equals the amount consumed by 18 people annually. One tree produces nearly 260 pounds of oxygen each year. On September 9th, 2013 the Wynford FFA Chapter competed at the District Forestry Contest. The contest was held at Camp Michael in Bucyrus, Ohio. There were 8 teams that competed. The contest covers 4 different sections: tree identification, general forest knowledge, chainsaw safety, and timber cruising. The team won the contest with Annika Gerlach, Aryn Copeland, Alexis Ross, and Luke Scott. Annika Gerlach placed first overall and Aryn Copeland placed 4th overall. The team of 4 will move on to compete at the State Forestry Contest held on Saturday, October 5, 2013 at Hocking Hills College.
