Wynford Recognizes Student-Athletes

Chris Solis, athletic director, wants to recognize Wynford student athletes by starting a new program for students in grades 9-12. All students who participate in a fall,  winter, or spring sport will have the opportunity to be recognized. In order to be eligible, each student must earn a 3.5 grade point average during the previous quarter of their current sport. Mr. Solis said, "Our athletes put in a tremendous amount of time in the classroom as well as outside of the classroom. I believe our athletes are students first and athletes second, and I want to see that they get recognition for this accomplishment." Wynford's first class of scholar athletes for cheerleading, cross country, golf, volleyball, and football are as follows:

Cheerleading: Allie Crall, Shelby Sipe, Taylor Leonhardt, Hannah Underwood, and Hannah Zeigler.

Cross Country: David Blank, Nathan Weithman, Chelsea Mosley, Ellie Richmond, Aryn Copeland, Kaleigh Swalley, and Madi Schiefer.

Golf: MacKenton Johnson and Annika Gerlach.

Volleyball: Brooke Miller, Maci Cooper, Rhieannae Cory, Alyssa Harrer, Mallory Moore, Hayley McCoy, Sarah Ogden, Alexus Ross, Janai Troutman, and Tara Zinser.

Football: Trey Smith, Cole Fortner, James Guinther, Nate Sparks, Dalton Benson, Zach Hoffman, and Dylan McLaughlin.

In the future, Mr. Solis would like this program to become part of the annual banquet for each sport. He wants each athlete to be recognized as a scholar athlete while participating in a sport at Wynford. Please take a moment to congratulate these students, as the photos of each student athlete will be posted in the cafeteria trophy case.

Royals and Bulldogs Match Strokes

Wynford and Crestline High School’s golf match at River Oaks Golf Club on September 2nd ends in a tie.The match was intense between the two schools as they traded strokes. The medalist of the night were Tyler Albright and Andrew Lutz with scores of 42. The top score from Wynford was a 44 from Quenten Stuckey followed by MacKenton Johnson with a 47. The overall score for the night for both teams was a 193. The Royals fall to 5-3-1. The golf team is back in action on Thursday, September 18th hoping to bring home a victory.

Golf Season Comes to an End

The Wynford golf team had their awards night to conclude their season. The golf team had an overall record of 14 and 6. The team won the NCC tournament and ended up third in the NCC with a record of 8 and 6. The first year letter winners were Levi Factor and Brenen McGuire.  The second year letter winners were Alec Thomas, Logan Leitzy, and Quenton Stuckey. Nathan Smith received his fourth letter for the Royals and finished his Royal golf career. Annika Gerlach and Kalyn Heinle were also part of the team but did not receive their letters. The team also had a few players who received individual awards; these players were Nathan Smith, Quenton Stuckey, and Logan Leitzy. Nathan Smith received medalist honors in the NCC tournament, was first team all NCC, and made it past sectionals into districts. Quenton Stuckey was named second team all NCC, and Logan Leitzy was named honorable mention all NCC. Overall the team had a very successful season.

Wynford Wins NCC Tournament

On Tuesday, September 17, 2013, The Wynford golf team defeated four other teams in the North Central Conference (NCC) Golf Tournament. Overall, Wynford scored a 341 as a team which was 3 strokes better than second place Galion.  Not only did Wynford play well as a team, but senior, Nate Smith, finished first on the leaderboard with medalist honors. Nate’s score of 76 was only four strokes over par at the Bucyrus Golf Club. Additional contributors to Wynford’s victory were Logan Leitzy, 85, Quenten Stuckey, 88, and Brennen McQuire, 92.  Coach Chandler was very pleased with the teams performance. He said, “Nathan and the team has a whole did very well.” Coach Chandler was very happy with the outcome of the match.  Wynford’s next NCC match is today at Bucyrus Golf Club versus Crestline at 4:00 p.m. and Sectional Tournament play begins Tuesday for girl’s and Thursday for boy’s.  Tee time for this event is scheduled for 9:00 a.m.

Wynford Wins Golf Match

On Thursday, September 5th Wynford played Bucyrus and Crestline in a duel golf match at the Bucyrus Golf Course.  It started at about 4pm and finished around  6:30 pm. Wynford’s final score was  a good 159 defeating both Bucyrus and Crestline. The final scores for Wynford were Nathan Smith with a low of 35, Logan Leitzy  with a 40, Alec Thomas  a 46, Quenten Stuckey also with a 46, and Brenen McGuire with a 38. Wynford is now 7-4 this year and they only have seven matches left in this year’s season. Mr. Chandler the golf coach said,  "that the golf team has had a good couple wins”. The golf team should be expecting many more wins in their future based on how well they did in their last match.

Fall Meet the Team Night

The Wynford community and parents came out in full force tonight to support all the fall athletes.  All the coaches introduced each player on all the fall sports for the upcoming 2013-2014 season.  The cheerleaders put on a great event and had many activities for all in attendance.  Some activities involved in the event were from car smashing, dance contest, and pie in the face.  The cheerleaders each performed dance and cheer routines for the fans. The food in the concession stand was delicious and tasty.
