Winter Homecoming

Stuckman Crowned Winter Homecoming Queen

By: Brooke Miller, The "Royal Times"
On December 20, 2013, during the junior varsity halftime, the 2013 Winter Homecoming crowning took place at Wynford High School. Wynford’s annual Winter Homecoming consists of a set of girls, one freshman, one sophomore, one junior, and three seniors. The girls all dressed in their nicest ball gowns were escorted down the court by one of the six basketball seniors this year. First up was freshman, Hannah Underwood who was escorted by Jake Glowaski. After Hannah and Jake took their place at the three-point line, the next announced girl was sophomore Jade Stuckman. Jade, however was wheeled in by Mason Davis rather than walking, due to her recent ACL tear during basketball. The crowd found humor when Mason wheeled Jade in a circle at half court. Then came junior attendant Samantha Lambert and her escort Mark Pfeifer. This was Samantha’s second year to be one of the underclassman attendants! After all the underclassmen took their positions, the seniors came. First announced was Kayli Stuckman, escorted by Michael Miller. After Kayli and Michael was second senior, Reegan Scott and her escort Gage Roe. The final senior was Beth DeLong with Zach Lear by her side.

After all the seniors were in place, 2012 Homecoming Queen, Haley Kocher walked down for her last time with her escort, senior, Kallan Stiles. Once Haley stood half court and waited for the queen to be announced, the whole crowd and girls, waited impatiently, anticipating who was going to be crowned. Once the band was done playing, Haley Kocher crowned Kayli Stuckman as the 2013 Winter Homecoming Queen. After the crowning, the queen and her court received VIP seating behind the scorers table to watch the rest of the junior varsity and varsity game where the Royals defeated the BucyrusRedmen55-42.

Wynford Royals Defeat Rivalry

By: Allie Crall, “The Royal Times”

On December 20, 2013, at Wynford High School, the Royals defeated the Redmen by playing as a team and doing what was needed for a victory. The Royals were 2-3 heading into the game against the Redmen. The Royals were ready to face their rivalry starting the game off shooting well and leading at the end of the first quarter. At the half, the Royals found themselves trailing 23-19 after the Redmen forced the Royals to commit numerous turnovers. After half time, the Royals played a near flawless second half outscoring the Redmen for a 55-42 victory. Top scorers for the Royals were Mason Davis and Jake Glowaski each with 13 points. This game brings the Royals to 3-3 overall and 1-0 in the conference. Junior, Hunter Miller said, “It was an all around team win, we made stops when we needed them and came out on top.” This was a great victory for the Royals to boost their confidence heading into another conference game at Upper Sandusky High School on December 27th at 6:00 p.m. taking on the Rams.

In junior varsity action, the Royals also downed the Redmen with a strong offensive performance. The junior varsity Royals were also 2-3 heading into the game. The Royals were in control the whole game; Bucyrus was never able to take the lead at any point. At the half, the Royals lead 24-18. After intermission, the Redmen and the Royals stepped up their game and made the second half very exciting. The Redmen staged a strong fourth quarter comeback and the fourth quarter got intense. This did not stop the Royals though. It was not until a Redman player was called for a technical foul, after slamming the basketball, disagreeing with an official's call. This sent Alex Crall to the line for two free throws and the Royals ending with possession of the ball. It was then clear who was going to win this game, the Royals 48-43. The Royals were led in scoring by Braxton Tea with 14 points and Alex Crall with 13. Sophomore, Alex Crall said, “When the game got tough we kept our composure to hold off their late run. It is always nice to beat Bucyrus.” The junior varsity Royals now stand 3-3 overall and 1-0 in the conference.

By: Todd Enders

The Lady Royals improve to 6-2 overall and 3-0 in the NCC with an impressive 57-28 victory over the Galion Tigers on Saturday. The Royals dominated the Tigers from tip-off until the final buzzer taking an early 10-0 lead before a Galion timeout. Continuing to disrupt the Tigers offense, the Royals poured in another 14 points offensively in the second quarter to take a 32-8 halftime lead. The second half was no different for the Royals. Creating an impressive 24 point lead, all the Lady Royals got a piece of the action. We also got a lot of playing time for everyone.” The Royals were lead in scoring by senior, Meghan Harrer, with 18 points. Also finishing in double figures for the Royals were Beth DeLong with 11 and Brenna Quinn with 10.

The Lady Royals outscored the Tigers in the second period 13-4 to take a 26-15 lead at halftime, which they would continue to expand on throughout the second half. An aggressive Royals defense disrupted the Tigers offense in the second half allowing them to maintain a healthy double digit lead. Wynford finished the Tigers off, 48-28. Gretchen Harris lead all scorers for the Royals with 14 while Haley Kocher added 12. The Lady Royals improve to 7-1 overall and 3-0 in the NCC. Royals Whip the Whippets

By: Hunter Miller

On Tuesday, December 17, the Lady Royals took on the Shelby Whippets. Early in the first quarter, the Royals shot themselves to a 9-0 lead, which would only be held on to for a short while when Shelby turned up their full court pressure. Wynford struggled with this at first and opened a door for a comeback by the Lady Whippets. The score at the half was 28-23 in favor of the Royals. The Whippets cut the deficit down quickly and played with the Royals for most of the game however; Meghan Harrer drilled back to back threes late in the fourth quarter to give the ladies the cushion they needed. The ladies had to fight through many periods of adversity and were still able to hold strong in the end with a final score of 62-51. The Lady Royals had four players finishing with double figures. Brenna Quinn lead all scorers with 20 points while Meghan Harrer finished with 15, Ellie Richmond with 11, and Beth Delong with 10.

In the junior varsity game, the Royals used an impressive 21 point fourth quarter to defeat the Whippets 41-25. The Lady Royals withstood several Whippet runs and a tough Whippet full court press to come away with the victory. The Lady Royals were led in scoring by sophomore, Mallory Moore, with 15 points and junior, Hannah Kocher, with 11. This brought the Royal’s overall record to an impressive 6-1 overall and 2-0 in league play. The Lady Royals will be looking to continue their winning streaks this Saturday, December 21st against NCC opponent, the Galion Tigers.

The Royals trailed by 5 at halftime, 15-10, after dealing with a very aggressive Ram full court press. Upper Sandusky slowly increased their lead to 12 by the end of the third period, 28-16. In the second game of the evening, the Upper Rams full court press was more than the 8th grade girls could handle. By: Brooke Miller

The Royals got off to a slow start, not clicking on all cylinders, with the Whippets leading after one quarter of play 23-9. The Whippets continued to stay hot offensively while the Royals still had difficulty putting the ball through the rim trailing at halftime 40-20. The Royals tried to regroup during halftime but could not overcome a 20 point deficit to the Whippets trailing after three quarters of play 63-30.  The Royals continued to struggle against Shelby’s aggressive defense while Shelby had no difficulty running the floor and scoring easily on the Royals with a final of 72-46. The leading scorer for the Royals was junior Austin Shutler with 13 points.  The next home game for the Royals is Friday, December 13 against the Buckeye Central Bucks at 6 p.m.

JH Boys Basketball Lose Season Openers

By: Kelsey Redden

On Tuesday, December 3, 2013, the junior high boys basketball team hosted their season opener against Buckeye Central in the elementary school gym. The 7th grade game was held first and tip off was at 5 pm. The game got off to a slow start, and it was the closest the Royals were to the Bucks all night. The Bucks lead at the end of period one 9-4. After the first quarter things only got worse for the Royals. Wynford struggled with their shooting game and committed numerous turnovers which the Bucks capitalized on. The Bucks offensive game was to fast for the Royals to keep up with. The Bucks lead at halftime the 19-6. When the Royals came out to start the second half, they looked determined. As the second half progressed, the Royals intensity slowly vanished. The mistakes they made in the first half were the same mistakes they made in the second half. The Bucks handed the Royals their first loss of the season 31-17. Caleb Rausch lead the Royals in scoring with 10 points. The Royals fall to 0-1 on the season.
The 8th grade game followed and was more up tempo compared to the 7th grade. Although the outcome was the same for the Royals, a loss to the Bucks. During the first quarter the Royals were within five points of the Bucks, and it was the closet the Royals could stay. The Bucks offense and defense were too much for the Royals. At halftime, the Royals were trailing the Bucks, and the Royals looked down as they walked to the locker room. The Royals were late coming back onto the court and still had a look of disappointment in their eyes. Things did not get better for the boys, as they still continued to commit turnovers. The Bucks were just too much for the Royals to keep up with. The Bucks handed the 8th grade boys (0-1) their first loss of the season 52-30. The leading scorers for the Royals were Cole Heinlen, 9, Zach Houck, 8, and Caleb Stone, 7. The Royals are not happy to start the season off with a loss, but know what they need to work on before their next game. The Royals next game is on Thursday, December 5 at home against Bucyrus.

By: Shae Duncan

Monday, December 2, 2013, the Wynford freshmen boys hosted Buckeye Central. In the first half, Wynford played well offensively but struggled to keep the bucks from scoring defensively trailing at halftime 20-14. After halftime, the royals improved defensively but they were still unable to stop the bucks aggressive offense . The final score was 40-24 with the bucks taking the win. This was the freshmen boys first game of the season. They left the game knowing their strengths and weaknesses as a team. Before the boys travel to Ridgedale on Wednesday, they know what improvements need to be made for a victory.
