Junior High NCC Tournament

Junior High Boys Basketball Season Comes to an End

By: Lainie Wright, “Royal Times”
On Saturday, February 8, 2014, the 7th grade boys basketball competed against Colonel Crawford in the NCC tournaments hosted at Wynford Elementary School. The Royals were not able to get a grip on Colonel Crawford’s strong offense from the beginning of the game. Colonel Crawford came ready to play and thats exactly what they did ending the game with a 37-16 win. The Royals fell behind in the first quarter and were unable to gather any confidence to put together a scoring run against the Eagles. Colonel Crawford was extremely aggressive fouling the Royals 18 times throughout the game. The Royals went to the foul line 21 times but only connected on eight free throws making up half their points for the game. The Royals defense was very aggressive but could not stop the Eagles as they move on in the tournaments. The Royals leading scorer was Blake Sparks with six points. The teams were split into a blue team and gray team this year and both teams had identical records of 1-5. The roster for the tournament game was made up of members from both teams. This lose for the Royals removes them from the tournament and ends the basketball season for the 7th graders.

The 8th grade Royals boys basketball were also defeated in the first round of the NCC tournaments against Colonel Crawford. The game was intense from the beginning with both teams clearly wanting to win and advance in the tournament. Each team continually traded baskets throughout the game. The Royal’s and Eagle’s offenses and defenses were giving it their all going head to head the entire game. In the first and third quarters, the Royals held a small lead of just one point. Nearing the end of the fourth quarter, Colonel Crawford was able to sink a three point shot putting them ahead and they did not look back. Neither team showed any signs of giving up. The Royals crowd went wild in the fourth quarter with a few questionable calls by the referees as both teams were tied almost the entire game up to the last three minutes. After a long and hard battle, the Royals started to slow down as they struggled to make shots. They fell behind by five points ending the game and season with the score of 46-41. The leading scorers for the Royals were Wesley Purdue with 17 points followed by Cole Heinlen with 16. The 8th grade boys end the season with a 5-6 record and are eliminated from the 8th grade NCC tournament.

Junior High Girls Go 1 for 1 on the Night

By: Lainie Wright
On Thursday, January 16th the 8th grade Lady Royals came out victorious against their rivals the Bucyrus Redmen. Winning in a low scoring game of 19-8. The Lady Royals played an aggressive game never letting the Redmen catch up. The Redmen trailed the entire game never coming close to the Lady Royals because of their strong offense and aggressive defense. At halftime, the Royals had a comfortable lead of 13-6. The Redmen were 0-10 from the foul line for the game which helped the Royals in their victory. In the fourth quarter, no points were scored by the Redmen because of the Royals strong defensive effort and refusing to lose to their rivals. The Royals were led in scoring by Shaylin Miller with 5 points; followed by Bailey Alspach, Sierra Richardson, and Gabby Grove with 4 points.

However, earlier in 7th grade action, the Lady Royals were not as lucky in their battle against the Bucyrus Redmen. It was a close game throughout with the Redmen defeating the Royals 34-29. The Royal’s missed some easy layups and committed costly turnovers which helped the Redmen tremendously in their victory. Alexis White said “The team needs to focus on the easy shots and work at committing less turnovers.” The first half shared numerous lead changes in a head to head battle with neither team falling to far behind. At halftime, the Royals had a very close 16-14 lead. The Lady Redmen quickly took the lead from the Royals shortly after the third quarter started and did not look back. The Lady Royals defense had difficulty stopping the Redmen’s offense in the second half. By: Todd Enders

The Wynford Royals junior high basketball teams finally get back into action after a long break over the holidays due to cancellations. Although the outcome was not what the 7th grade blue team wanted, falling to 0-4 on the season. At the half, the Falcons led the Royals 15-9.  In the third period, the Royals only managed to go one for five from the foul line and missed all their field goal attempts; only scoring one point trailing 25-10 at the end of the third period. The Falcons continued to play their aggressive defense, and the Royals outscored the Falcons nine to six in the fourth period; still not enough to come away with a victory. The Falcons defeated the Royals 31-19. Coach Oliver stated, "This is the best game we have played as a team so far this year." The Royals were led in scoring by Logen Sand with five points and Noah Smith, Ethan Bailey, and Caleb Rausch with four.

In eight grade action, the Royals defeated the Falcons in impressive fashion for their first win of the season; bringing their record to 1-3. They forced the Falcons to commit numerous turnovers creating many layups for the Royals; leading at halftime 21-4. By: Todd Enders
The Lady Rams traveled to Wynford last night and handed both the 7th and 8th grade girls their first losses of the season. In 7th grade action last night, the Royals were defeated 36-24. The Royals trailed by 5 at halftime, 15-10, after dealing with a very aggressive Ram full court press. Upper Sandusky slowly increased their lead to 12 by the end of the third period, 28-16. Still continuing to press full court, the Royals made a little run during the final period but were not able to decrease the Ram’s double digit lead. The only two scorers for Wynford were Alexis White with 20 and Olivia Grove with 4. The Lady Royals fall to 2-1 on the season.
In the second game of the evening, the Upper Rams full court press was more than the 8th grade girls could handle. The Royals, 2-1 overall, had difficulty getting the ball across half court committing numerous turnovers leading to Upper’s evening of dominance. Upper jumped out to a 13-0 lead before the Royals managed to add their first point of the evening at the foul line. The Rams never relinquished the lead and managed to defeat the Lady Royals by a final of 40-18. Shaylin Miller added 7 points for the Royals while Sierra Richardson added 6. JH Boys Basketball Lose Season Openers

By: Kelsey Redden

On Tuesday, December 3, 2013, the junior high boys basketball team hosted their season opener against Buckeye Central in the elementary school gym. The 7th grade game was held first and tip off was at 5 pm. The game got off to a slow start, and it was the closest the Royals were to the Bucks all night. The Bucks lead at the end of period one 9-4. After the first quarter things only got worse for the Royals. Wynford struggled with their shooting game and committed numerous turnovers which the Bucks capitalized on. The Bucks offensive game was to fast for the Royals to keep up with. The Bucks lead at halftime the 19-6. When the Royals came out to start the second half, they looked determined. As the second half progressed, the Royals intensity slowly vanished. The mistakes they made in the first half were the same mistakes they made in the second half. The Bucks handed the Royals their first loss of the season 31-17. Caleb Rausch lead the Royals in scoring with 10 points. The Royals fall to 0-1 on the season.
The 8th grade game followed and was more up tempo compared to the 7th grade. Although the outcome was the same for the Royals, a loss to the Bucks. During the first quarter the Royals were within five points of the Bucks, and it was the closet the Royals could stay. The Bucks offense and defense were too much for the Royals. At halftime, the Royals were trailing the Bucks, and the Royals looked down as they walked to the locker room. The Royals were late coming back onto the court and still had a look of disappointment in their eyes. Things did not get better for the boys, as they still continued to commit turnovers. The Bucks were just too much for the Royals to keep up with. The Bucks handed the 8th grade boys (0-1) their first loss of the season 52-30. The leading scorers for the Royals were Cole Heinlen, 9, Zach Houck, 8, and Caleb Stone, 7. The Royals are not happy to start the season off with a loss, but know what they need to work on before their next game. The Royals next game is on Thursday, December 5 at home against Bucyrus.
